1- Is it possible for a person born in Uruguay to hold two or more nationalities?

Yes. Persons born in Uruguay or born outside but from an Uruguayan-born parent can take another or many nationalities without losing or changing their Uruguayan nationality status. There's no actual or legal way to renounce to this type of nationality status.


2- What happens with the ones born outside Uruguay; Are they eligible to hold Uruguayan nationality in addition to other(s)?
Only persons born to an Uruguayan-born parent will be exempt to formal renouncement of previous nationality.


3- Am I intended to renounce my original or current nationality when I naturalize as an Uruguayan national?
Any foreigner willing to take up Uruguayan nationality will be asked to renounce his/her current nationality. See the cases in which you can keep your nationality status despite the fact of formal renouncement quoting the Dutch Immigration Board examples here that will likely apply to the Uruguayan Citizenship Branch.


4- How could I know if I will be able to keep my original or current nationality despite the fact of formal renouncement?
The best way to assure that you will not lose your current nationality when naturalized as an Uruguayan national is to find out in your consulate or to know well enough the laws of your country regarding nationality and retention of this.


5- Am I entitled to an Uruguayan Passport upon acquisition of Uruguayan nationality?
Yes.


6- What passport am I to use when I travel from or to Uruguay?
You should use your Uruguayan passport at the Uruguayan check point. You may as well be able to show your Uruguayan national ID card (Cédula de Identidad) stating you are an Uruguayan national as proof of nationality.


7- Do I obtain any tax breaks in Uruguay because of Uruguayan nationality?
No.


8- How much money does Uruguayan nationality cost?
Any information upon Uruguayan nationality and citizenship must be obtained at Corte Electoral. In Montevideo: Sección Ciudadanía Legal, Ituzaingó street 1467, Planta Baja. Find out schedule calling (598-2) 9154238.


9- Do my children become Uruguayan nationals upon my acquisition of Uruguayan nationality?
No, each person must ask for acquisition individually. There's no automatic way to become an Uruguayan other than birth in Uruguay soil.


10- Is there any facilities for persons original from certain countries to naturalize as Uruguayan nationals?
No, only family situation could affect the time of residence before you are entitled to ask for Uruguayan nationality.


11- Am I entitled to vote or run for office right after my acquisition of Uruguayan nationality?
No, as a naturalized Uruguayan national you must
A) Wait a period of three years after taking up the nationality before you are eligible to vote or run for electoral positions; and
B) Be at least 18 years of age at the day of the poll.


12- Am I obliged to vote once I become an Uruguayan national?

Yes. Voting is compulsory within Uruguay, except in primaries of each political party polls and few other exceptions in which you are not obliged. Fines may be likely a result of not voting once you are registered in the electoral board.


13- Do I risk losing my Uruguayan citizenship because I vote in another country I am a citizen of?
Not at all.


14- Am I supposed to fulfill any type of public service because I am an Uruguayan national?
No. In Uruguay there isn't anything like compulsory military service for anyone in particular.


15. Do I lose my Uruguayan nationality because I took a new one and live outside Uruguay?
Yes. As a naturalized Uruguayan national when formally taking another one you will automatically lose it.
