CEP concluded yesterday in the department of Florida a week of meetings to analyze various current issues affecting the country. One of the principal topics was the law that will recognize cohabitation, which will be voted on in the coming days in the Uruguayan parliament. The public announcement of bishops says that "the promotion and defense of the family institution have always been of concern for the Church because its consequences in the wealth and happiness of the individuals and society itself". Regarding the bill, the bishops remarked "despite that the bill intends to protect some rights for many compatriots living in such a situation or affected by it, it cannot be acceptable to equalize de facto (or cohabitation) union with marriage which allocates a bunch of previsions protecting its fate, harmony and stability by mutual fidelity". In regards to homosexuals the bishops expressed that "in no (possible) way can homosexual cohabitation be accepted because it does not meet the basic criteria defining marriage, it is therefore unacceptable to place it in suchlike equal level". "We believe that the so-called advantage in favor of the unmarried and homosexual couples dwelling in a shared environment for a long time ought not to affect negatively the institution of family recognized by the Uruguayan Constitution and it does need to be taken care of and because of the incentive that it creates in society".
