Where to go if you need books in English? What are the possibilities to find a book store? Can I get a place to read a newspaper from the United States and certain publications? Is there anywhere to go to find specific reading material?
There are two medium size public libraries with a few shelves of books in English and some publications may be obtained.
The one I would recommend for being quite diverse in contents, good cultural environment and the possibility to buy books is Alianza Cultural Uruguay Estados Unidos located in the downtown of Montevideo. It is a place in which you will be able to read some newspapers and magazines like Time or Newsweek. Other publications like the Journal of Education, for example, can be found there. It is a pretty good stocked library. You can take books to your house paying a small fee for a year. It opens Mondays to Fridays in the afternoom. The place counts with free internet connection.
The other place to go is Instituto Cultural Anglo Uruguayo. The place is not as nice as the Alianza but you would still find some books, especially classic british novels. There's no possibility to buy books. Also located in Montevideo downtown opening Mondays to Fridays from 9 Am to 6 PM.
A good place to buy books in English is the bookshop. There are three bookshops in Montevideo, the main house located at downtown, and also little apendixes, one in Montevideo Shopping and the other in the neibourhood of Punta Carretas just across the street from the mall main entrance. The store is a good source to find books for children and people learning English as a foreign language.
