The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Square Turns Two Years Old E-mail

February 2nd 2005 was the day the square was opened to the public. I was there! I remember I was part of an advocacy group. We had been advocating and lobbying for the creation of the square. We felt the need to pursue our goal to obtain some sort of social recognition of the LGTB community in Uruguay. It took some time but I do not feel it was too of a struggle to make.

Other advocates I had the chance to meet the mayor in order to lobby for the square and bring awareness to lesbian and gay issues.

The square continues to be a very symbolic icon representing move in the direction to recognize sexual minorities. By such an accomplishment we were shown respect and took a leap towards our taget of equality for all human beings, binding society to the dignity we all deserve in a world full of diversity.
