Gay Ghettos in Uruguay? E-mail

Most urban places might have visually a gay ghetto. Nevertheless Montevideo being the biggest and most populated city of the country does not follow this trend.

Most gay-friendly places are located in downtown, Old Town and in the neighborhood of Pocitos. You notice the gay presence by the decoration of places, the sort of business and the looks in the street.

The rest of the city is less urban than these neighborhoods having the offices buildings of the city there is a lot of movement of people during the day.

Even when you get to see the gay presence you cannot describe a gap between straight people in one side and the  gay ghettos apart. Even when the city has poor places and very rich places, none of them allocate a gay ghetto in particular. The idea of a gay ghetto is inconceivable in here.

Gay people can be found anyplace, any social class, any part of the city. I can say that even when homosexuality is still seen with some sort of a taboo for many people, this does not equate the idea of putting gay people in a place of total or partial exclusion. There is also some sort of explosion of homosexuals coming out. Uruguay is not the exception, and you notice gay people in more places and situations in everyday life.

At this time of my life, I think it is real good to be able to meet gay people living in different places than seeing or having a misconception of gay life to exclusively happen in a ghetto, meaning this people cannot live with the rest and must be located in a particular place. I like the very idea of having the capacity to live wherever we want and be what we are no matter where.
