Local Economy E-mail

Uruguay is becoming more and more international in many aspects. In the field of Economy growing on a high rate for the last 4 years. Historically the country based its economy on meat (the traditional ranch in the United States here is known as Estancia) and leather. This has changed over the years. Forestry, tourism, banking and Education developed a lot in the last 20 years.

Free zones have developed to a level of competitiveness that companies like Merrill Lynch, Sabre Holdings, Tata Consultancy and other big corporations have opened offices and at times HQ in these zones. The good thing to know about these free zones is that any investment made in there is excempt of taxes, making invesments grow a lot in Uruguay.

There are about five free zones in the country, one in Montevideo known as Zonamerica but also in San José, Fray Bentos, Florida and Rivera. There is a special investment law promoting these free zones.

Become familiar with the advantages of working from Free Zone

Another industry that grew a lot in the last years is Tourism. After the huge financial crisis (2002) in the River Plate Argentina and Uruguay became very competitive destinations for tourists. Many come here to buy cheap or because of the Casinos but others come here for the quality in hotels and products. Others are willing to know people of the south hemisphere.

You will see all types of tourists in Uruguay. Gay cruises during summer have come more and more often, however our desire is that Uruguay can be seen as a Gay-friendly destination throughout the entire year as well as Buenos Aires is. Montevideo is a 45-min flight or a 3-hour Ferry-cross from Buenos Aires. Our goal is to promote gay tourists in the other side of the river to cross it and know a new country where they will find not only affortable prices but also a spirit of a country opening to the world.
