The cost of Internet connectivity in Uruguay is not as high as one might expect. Despite the fact that broadband Internet connections are competitively priced for the region, Uruguay has developed a reputation for having high-priced Internet services. This reputation has developed into almost an "urban legend". And, as with any legend, this legend is fed in part by some truth, some exaggerated truth, and some outdated (or downright incorrect) information.
Internet connection charges from the government run Internet company, Anteldata, or the companies reselling its Internet services ,are in most cases less expensive than the ones offered in Brazil and Chile, and slightly more expensive than Argentina. Moreover, the prices of Internet services in Uruguay have been dropping precipitiously over the last two years, while the bandwidth has increased. The most economic option for broadband dropped by 77 % from January 2004, costing USD 52 (taxes included) to USD 12 nowadays. The ADSL service of 256 K by then cost USD 79, now it cots USD 24.5: a 70 % reduction. Also the speed we got by then has been multiplied 15 times. Tarifa Plana (Unlimited Internet service) The prices offered by the Uruguayan State Company (or the ones of the private competition Dedicado) aren't that high in terms of a connection of 512 K speed or higher. The price in Uruguay of such a service is USD 37 per month just the same price as Argentine internet provider Speedy of Telefónica de Argentina offers. Similar services in Brazil or Chile are more expensive: between USD 48 to USD 62. Source: Observa |
